I think my main problem with this novel was that it wasn t story it was long essay The book is written in the perspective of Camilla Mexican girl who has recently immigrated to the US Left Fur Dead and the storytelling style while in the first person is freuently in the past tensend goes off into tangents It felt devoted to dumping s much information on Mexican culture in one novel s possible rather than story bout Death by Tea a girl who needed to check her privilege Camilla liesbout her parents in n effort to see how racist her classmates can be because she was surprised to find that it is so Which makes me uestion how she could have been surprised when she herself says that she watches lot of American media I could tell you how racist people I ssume re in the US towards Indians just by the portrayal of Indian American characters Ignoring the fact that she doesn t even try to correct them By Way Of A Wager and let racist stereotypes be perpetrated most of this goes unchallenged by her own brother who is concerned with her lying than the fact that she is doing the former In fact with the exception of Milly no one else tries to correct her on that frontnd her racist so called friends had only been so because they wanted to have diverse friend in their group I m so out of eyerolls t this moment because the book before this had put me in bad mood The book while trying to be culturally inclusive is wrapped in the bland package of trying too hard nd mediocre descriptive writing My only consolation over it ll was that it was only When Kingdom Comes a blessed 200 pages I couldn t have been happier to see the last chapter well until I realized it was preachy thank you speech of sorts While the cultural diversity in the book comes through there was one point in the book when Camilla joked that she was possibly schizophrenic excuse me being liar who leads double life doesn t make you schizophrenic The Wayward Bride (Besotted Scots, and it is insensitive to paint mental illness in such manner Camilla s mother s nxiety was mostly Such a Dance abandonedfter that plot point was made nd it served mostly s plot initiator than plot rcOverall the book is blandly written nd boring nd even the lush details on Mexican culture can t make up for that fact Received n La bte du marais advance reader copy in exchange for fair review from Random House Children s via Netgalley I got Laos: Keystone Of Indochina an ARC of this thanks to Vinend I have one word regarding this book noActually I have than one word Sorry for lying How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World and being justs general s the book itself is I ll do what it never did nd be specific The Go Between is unusually short Geeking Out on 11C and that s because it s like first draft that lays out in general terms what happens in the book Incidents Et ainsi de suite are discussed without much detailnd large timeskips happen often leaving it feeling incomplete This is the kind of book I d write if I were one for writing shitty first drafts that lay out the story s bare bones so I could go back The Shoshoni Cookbook and expand on scenes later There s no emotion to be foundHell my book outlinesre just barely detailed than this book isHer best friends Willow Historias sobre los Fondos Bahá'ís and Tiggyre ridiculously racist especially the latter While I understand Cammi eventually forgiving Willow once Cammi s jig is up I honestly can t see why she forgives Tiggy IT S THAT BADAND THE USE OF SPANISH Cammi spells out every single Spanish phrase she uses no matter how simple or obvious they Reasoning with the Infinite: From the Closed World to the Mathematical Universe are Readers will get what s being said based on context cluestheir own smartsnd don t need to be patronized monthgo nd forgot to take notes but I m still stewing in my nger whenever I think bout this book I m sure you can find better Latinx representation One suggestion The Education of Margot Sanchez by Lilliam Rivera It s got complicated characters good use of Spanish language without treating readers like they need everything translated nd comes with free bucket to help you catch ll your tears Okay that last one is lie but I recommend getting bucket The story nd characters gave me lot of feelings okay A telling of life has immigrant from Mexico to the US Lack of style nd story that even if it touch n interesting nd ctual subject was just uninteresting by the Mr Darcy's Cottage of Earthly Delights: Shades of Pride and Prejudice amount of little factsnd familly necdotes Not really worth it in my opinion Thank you. 5 hours nd 30 minutesFans of Jane the Virgin will find much to love bout this coming of ge novel from bestselling uthor Veronica Chambers who with humor nd humanity explores Immigrants But how long could she hold the lie Despite its slow pace simple plot nd various other shortcomings I feel that the uthor should be commended for throwing light on the kind of difficult life immigrant people lead every single day in the US The transition of Cammi s life was beautifully penned Juxtaposing the high life that she had in Mexico City with the hostile reception she got in the US clearly displays the sickening racist ttitude Deep Lane: Poems against the Mexicans in the US which persist till dateMost people might not find this to ben entertaining read but personally I Komisario Nuusku ja makkaratehtaan arvoitus always supportuthors who pick up some of the most pressing world issues s the theme of their novel I took this ARC from work when we received it nd t first the synopsis really nnoyed me when I read the back which Our Necessary Shadow: The Nature and Meaning of Psychiatry appeared to bebout spoiled rich kids nd their problems Immediately my ssumptions were like Ugh this isn t something I m going to relate to I m glad I stuck it out because it s The Online Diary of a Masochistic Submissive a really sweet storybout embracing your cultural heritage nd staying true to who you reSince the Industry and Empire: The Birth of the Industrial Revolution author Veronica Chambers is of Panamanian descent she brings bit of that multicultural influence which there re plenty of in this book The story concerns n ffluent Mexican teenager name Cammi whose mother is famous telenovela star nd her father does Spanish voice over work for the movie nd television industry within the country It s easy to be dismissive of the main character especially when she laments how difficult it is to be rich nd how her family name is of curse than My Lady Viper a blessing However Chambers keeps her protagonist level headednd down to earth Sunflower as she wants to beccepted by people for herself rather than her socio economic backgroundIt is interesting to note here that the uthor is writing bout the experiences of someone who is from the upper class of the Hispanic culture where most novels concern Latinos who re either within the lower poverty income bracket or working class level This is direct contrast to the typical struggles many of them face with topics like immigration racism poverty nd stereotyping but gain Chambers touches upon these issues in the book which really gives Doughnuts: Simple and Delicious Recipes to Make at Home a different perspective in comparing two worldsAs the story continues Cammi s mother gets major role in n American television show s maid nd the whole family moves to L A where Cammi reinvents herself s working class teenager of domestic parents mong her group of elitist peers Like fly on the wall she uickly learns that no matter who you re or how much money you have society is going to make ssumptions bout you based upon your ethnicity nd backgroundNow I grew up in predominantly Hispanic community where the socio economic background ranged from low income to working class middle level status It s not uncommon to see my neighbors leaving our rea to work in the high end residential reas s housekeepers domestics gardeners Announcing Trouble and laborers Hell even my parents worked two jobs in factoriesnd maintenance to put food on the table This is the world I was raised in Reading this book in some ways related to my experiences of the perceptions the public had of the people that lived in my neighborhoodThrough Cammi we uickly see that there re still going to be plenty of the same ssumptions The Book of Revelation: and stereotypess demonstrated by her classmates The Sound of Music Story: How A Beguiling Young Novice, A Handsome Austrian Captain, and Ten Singing von Trapp Children Inspired the Most Beloved Film of All Time and it does give her the realization that money doesn tlways garner Edward Keating: Main Street: The Lost Dream of Route 66 acceptancend respect On side note I worked with friend who lso came from n Cold Blood affluent Mexican backgroundnd she refused to divulge this information to Calibre (Inspector Brant, anyone but her close friends because she wanted to be treateds regular person on n eual level rather than be treated differently because her family had money In many ways she was very much like the Cammi character who preferred to hang out with working class individuals than rich kids who preferred to boast bout their wealth This is what helps ground her nd makes her relatable nd pproachable A definite plus in building the protagonist s characterIn short The Go Between was The Dirty Game: Uncovering the Scandal at FIFA a fun uick read The writing was simplend I breezed through it in couple of hours However there re some basic themes ie socio economic status empathy building self esteem pride cultural etc that re touched upon in the bookI definitely would give this one shot.
