Silly grammatical errors kept popping up throughout the book Wish the author had a better copy editor This novel is Multi layered and rich with detail It takes you to the heart of what it means to be different A uick but satisfying read So the book did get better I thought as it went along Not great but heartwarming nonetheless I was happy to see that it wasn t a perfect ending and did leave some loose ends not storybook but I gotta say sometimes I m a sucker for the storybook ending tooWould I recommend it Maybemaybe not Not a bad book but definitely not one I d buy at full price either Sunnyside Blues is entertaining often dark and unpredictable You ll enjoy it as long as you don t examine it too closelyBefore the attractive yet misleading cover gives you any ideas know what this book isn t It s not a feel good romance It s not a summertime lake story It s not the cutesy bonding of an adult with an easily lovable kid It s not really about Sunnyside or BluesIt does involve Snakes and fire Running from your past and running from your problems Facing said past and problems Religion or cults depending on your view Andes our easily distracted and mildly unbalanced protagonist that never stops to think but is likable despite her problems Chase the poster boy for birth control that manages to make you love him while wanting to gag and bind him to a chair Some shadyinteresting secondary characters crackwhore mom gay Hardy boys functional alcoholic father clingy exotic dancer zealous abusive father stale rag sheet reporters Hilda the warm and comforting friendmother figure Dave the perfectly boring firemanIt s hard to describe this book because it s a big ol mess of characters and plot but overall it was a good readMy only big beef was the ending Disappointingly abrupt And unsatisfying Andes finally manages to form re. Wrong book for me to have picked up because I literally stayed up all night to read it Now don t get me wrong this is not a suspenseful book or even a thriller but I wanted to know what happened next and so I kept readingAndes is a bit of a misfit She s an outcast of sorts and recognizes herself to be one When she heads to Seattle she hopes to begin again She finds a houseboat to rent but in doing so also finds a father and a son that have been through uite a bit together and when the father ends up in ail Andes end up with the kidLet s talk about the kid a bit Chase is a ten year old boy He s one of those extremely bright kids that you have to watch out for He s been taking care of his alcoholic father for some time and doesn t appreciate having to be watched However this kid is trouble I compared him to Damien a few times You know Damien from The Omen That movie scares me to this day Anyway he s a tough kid to watch but Andes can relate to him her being an outcast and all and they forge an unlikely bond to one anotherAs the father sorts out his issues Andes begins to wonder if she can make a life for this kid However Andes has her own issues and when Chase learns of them she realizes that she either has to face them or risk never being whole again In the mean time she s met a guy that she thinks she might have a future with but will he understand her need to tie up loose endsTo me this book was like a runaway train It took off from the station and ust kept going I found the characters to be deeply complex yet I found myself relating to each of them at different parts of the story My only criticism is perhaps the age of Chase For me his mannerisms made me think eight years old or so not ten but I have a ten year old so I perhaps compared him to my own son in this regardVisit my blog Book Chatter and Other Stuff. D a chance to settle in before her new life is upended by her landlord Jay and his son Chase Smart guarded and precocious Chase touches a chord with Andes even as he plays on her last nerve And though she agrees to accompany the boy on a burning uest to Sunnyside ueens Andes is sure it will prove fruitless in fact she has promised Jay it will be But in this new strange unexpectedly welcoming city both Andes and Chase will.
