April Hamilton: The Indie Author Guide

Hed it up todayIf you re clueless about self publishing and even need an overview of traditional publishing too and you re not very tech savvy this book definitely warrants 5 stars April really approaches the book as though you have very limited knowledge about publishing options ormatting your book How to Make a Plant Love You for print on demand or ebook and marketing by developing your brand and author platform As such she provides tremendous detail about things like how to create styles in a Word document or how to set up a professional looking Facebook pageIound this book incredibly helpful in laying out the landscape Cities and Dialogue for me at a time when I had little information However in the nearly two years since I ve started reading the book I ve been exposed to other resources such as the Creative Penn and The Book Designer blogs and APE Author Publisher Entrepreneur How to Publish a Book by Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch and some things have changed so my own personal review is now leaning towards 4 starsI still plan to rely on this bookor help in setting up my documents since it does provide such specific details or ormatting Dark Tide Rising (William Monk for galleys Also I think the chapter on promotion is really helpful in comparing different tools based on price time commitment and level of tech savviness needed though things have changed somewhat since the book was initially published I do see that there is an ebook available now so perhaps that has updatesIf you re considering self publishing this is a wonderful and detailed book Some of the technical details are a bit outdated but still understandable and relevant If you also happen to be light on technical skills or unwilling to invest a lot of time or money in learning about the technical side of self publishing this is definitely a great choice If you have a basic understanding of self publishing and you re very tech savvy this book may be too basicor you A good reference The Internet Book for people who are interested in getting published and are thinking about trying the do it yourself approach It lists all the steps involved in independent publishing and includes checklists and other guides I don t know very much about this topic but it seemed to be very thorough My only real uibble was with theormatting The pages are printed in two columns which is The Queen from Provence (Plantagenet Saga, fineor a book of this size but the Fearless Jack font seemed smaller than usual and the layout seemed a little cramped in places Very informative She gives a very concise look into the world of publishing and I think would cause anyone to uestion the merit of traditional publishing in the current market Also her writing style is accessible to anyone not dry like you might expectrom what is essentially a reference bookFull review here. P the rating higher depending on how much the guide helps me on my own journey Certainly this book is well written and well organized However generally information and tips are airly basic and unimaginative There is a good bit of detail presented on BASIC information on the technical side of setting up an authors platform and publishing However if you already have a solid competency in this area the information will not be usefulMuch of the general tips and recommendations are very similar to information that one can gather through other sources such as blogs Icon from publicist marketing gurus agents etc I also was a bit peeved that some of the easy resources Hamilton suggestion do not have the web addressed listed in the book but can be assessed through her online guide which of course reuires an additionaleeIn summary this is a good basic book However it s usefully will depend on the individual needs of the reader I think it will be the best valuable Pillow Talk for those unfamiliar with the variousorms of social media setting up a website and blog etc April Hamilton s book is a comprehensive guide to indie publishing covering general and specific topics Rikers High from picking the type of publishing that s bestor you to how to Buried format a documentor an ebook It s easy to understand in act Hamilton explains everything as if you re entirely new to the topic Since I m not new to the topic I simply skimmed where she did go into details I already knew The heftiest sections were the most beneficial those on Author Platform Highly recommended or anyone considering or even wondering about indie publishing Should be called The Indie Author Who Doesn t Really Want To Be an Indie Author Guide Despite periodic reassurances to the contrary the author clearly as a bias toward Wolfsbane (Nightshade feeling that indie publishing is not as good as traditional publishing and just KNOWS that her readers really would prefer to be picked up by a publisher That was very annoyingAlso annoying was theact that I uickly Leading By Design found I couldn t trust her to know what she was talking about For instance the section on personalacebook pages vs Kanata facebookan pages clearly demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge on how First Impressions facebookan pages work She gives absolutely the wrong adviceMUCH better books or the indie author are Write Publish Repeat by Sean Platt and the Indie Author Survival Guide by Susan Kaye uinn I picked up this book at the Borders closing sale in 2011 and it was my irst Arctic Labyrinth foray the world of self publishing or indie publishing as April L Hamilton calls it I started reading it immediately got about 60% through and then lent it to ariend or what turned out to be about a year I just got it back this weekend and inis.
